Indian Golfer Lahiri qualifies for Tokyo Olympics

Anirban Lahiri is an Indian professional golfer who currently plays on the Asian Tour and PGA Tour. He has recently qualified for the Tokyo Olympics as the highest-ranked Indian men’s golfer. The Tokyo Games will be played from July 23 to August 8.

Anirban Lahiri made the cut at the 60^th spot, the last available quota in the Tokyo Olympics rankings. India was eligible for one spot and Lahiri being the highest placed golfer from the country at the 340^th position, qualified.

“I’m feeling really blessed and fortunate right now. I was obviously not expecting it. I had no clue or information about what was going on with the withdrawals. I’m just beginning to realize and plan for it as to what I’m going to do over the next month,” Lahiri said. “It is always a great honor to represent India. But I have to start planning now, also with where I find myself on the PGA Tour (currently 118^th ),” he added.

Golf was brought back into the Olympics in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games for the first time since the 1904 edition.

Last year, Lahiri finished Tied-25^th and that helped him rise from 354^th to 340^th. He needed a couple of withdrawals from certain countries to squeeze in and as the deadline of the three-year qualification process for the men’s golf competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics passed on Tuesday morning, he found himself exactly on the 60^th spot.
