In a huge diplomatic win for India, the United Nations on Wednesday (1 st May) designated Pakistan- based Jaish-e-Mohammed(JEM) chief Masood Azhar as a "global terrorist" after China lifted its hold on a proposal to blacklist him. He has been associated with and lead several terror activities in India including the attack on the Indian parliament in 2001 and recently the Pulwama attacks where 40 Indian soldiers very killed. Indians have begun voting in the first phase of a general election to elect members of parliament for the lower house (Lok Sabha). 900 million eligible voters will vote in this 7 phases till 19 th may. The votes will be counted on 23 rd May and results will be announced on the same day. There are 2 major parties which will collide in this battle. Japan Emperor steps down

In his last public address as emperor, Akihito handed over the symbols of power and thanked the public for their support during his 30-year reign. The 85-year-old was given permission to abdicate after saying he felt unable to fulfill his role because of his age and declining health. He is the first Japanese monarch to stand down in more than 200 years. Jet Airways in trouble

Troubled Indian airline Jet airways has temporarily suspended all its domestic and international flights. The airline said its last flight would operate on Wednesday (17 th April). The airline has been having financial trouble since a long time and they have accumulated a debt of 1.2 billion dollars. They have been asking lenders for funding since weeks but no one has come forward. Hence, they have no choice but to suspend all flights as they are not able to pay for fuel or other critical services. Even their employees and suppliers have not been paid for months. Fire in Notre Dame iconic building of Paris

A major fire has engulfed the medieval church Norte Dame, one of Paris’s finest landmarks. A devastating fire that began on Monday afternoon (15 th April) has destroyed the roof of the 850-year-old UNESCO world heritage landmark, whose spectacular Gothic spire collapsed before the eyes of horrified onlookers. Norte Dame was icon of Paris and attracts more visitors than the Eiffel Tower every year.
