The world this week is an attempt to provide worldly news to kids once a week. The idea behind this is to make them get started on reading world news but it’s written in a child friendly manner and explains some concepts too

George Fernandes Dies

George Fernandes, former Defense Minister of India dies on January 29th, 2019 at the age of 88. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and was bedridden for past few years. Alzheimer is a type of dementia which causes loss of memory, thinking and behaviour. Mr Fernandes was a key member of the Janata Dal and the founder of the Samata Party. He held several ministerial portfolios including communications, industry, railways, and defence. The funeral was held on January 30 th , after the arrival of his son Sean Fernandes from the USA. International Holocaust Remembrance Day – January 27, 2019

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an international memorial day on 27 January commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War. It commemorates the genocide that resulted in the death of an estimated 6 million Jews, 8.7 million Slavs, 1.8 million ethnic Poles, 220,000 Romani people, 250,000 mentally and physically disabled people, 312,000 Serb civilians, 1,900 Jehovah's Witnesses, 70,000 (includes political dissidents and homosexual men), by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. On 27 January 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, was liberated by the Red Army. Antarctic Hole

British scientists have dug a 7060 foot borehole, through the Antarctic ice sheet, using a hot- water drill. The comically long ice hole is the largest ever for West Antarctica, and it’s meant to improve our understanding of climate-related sea level rise. This project, run by the British Antarctic Survey, is called “Bed Access, Monitoring and Ice Sheet History,” or BEAMISH. The World Economic Forum, based in Cologny-Geneva, Switzerland, was founded in 1971 as a not-for-profit organization. It gained formal status in January 2015 under the Swiss Host- State Act, confirming the role of the Forum as an International Institution for Public-Private Cooperation. India’s Republic Day celebration

India's 70th Republic Day celebrations took place amidst tight security in the national capital, with the traditional grand military parade on Rajpath. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial at India Gate and along with the three chiefs of the armed forces paid homage to soldiers who lost their lives in combat.
