World This Week

The world this week is an attempt to provide worldly news to kids once a week. The idea behind this is to make them get started on reading world news but it’s written in a child friendly manner and explains some concepts too

North Pole shifting

The north pole is shifting and very rapidly. A storm is raging in the centre of the Earth. Nearly 2,000 miles beneath our feet, in the swirling, spinning ball of liquid iron that forms our planet’s core and generates its magnetic field, a jet has formed, roiling the molten material beneath the Arctic. This geological gust is enough to send Earth’s magnetic North Pole skittering across the globe. The place to which a compass needle points is shifting toward Siberia at a pace of 30 miles a year. Due to the political storm in Washington, scientists have been unable to…

Sankranti Celebrations across India in full swing

India celebrated Makar Sankranti on 14th January, and the celebrations extended to 15th January. Makar Sankranti is basically a celebration of Sun's move into the 10th house of the zodiac Capricorn or Makara. This celestial transition results in longer and warmer days. While, the longer spell of sunlight is very crucial for the crops, it is also a retreat for everybody who has been dreading every bit of the bone-chilling winter months. The harvest festival is celebrated across the country with much fervour and gaiety. Other harvest festivals such as Lohri, Bhogali Bihu and Pongal also fall on the same date as Makar Sankranti. Makar Sankranti is one of…

Edible Vaccine to save Bees

Every year, the world loses a growing number of pollinators, such as honeybees. Pesticides, climate change, and vanishing habitats are leading causes of population decline, which could have detrimental consequences for the planet. Along with all this, honeybees also can fall victim to bacterial diseases, wiping out entire colonies. However, a team of Finnish scientists has developed a new vaccine that could help to save them. Researchers at the University of Helsinki have developed the first-ever edible honeybee vaccine to protect them against fatal bacterial disease American Foulbrood (AFB). Caused by spore-forming bacteria Paenibacillus Larvae, AFB is highly resistant, lasting up to 50 years in some cases, spreading spores…
