World This Week

The world this week is an attempt to provide worldly news to kids once a week. The idea behind this is to make them get started on reading world news but it’s written in a child friendly manner and explains some concepts too

India wins test match series against Australia

The Border–Gavaskar Trophy is a Test cricket series played between India and Australia since 1996. India has developed a reputation of being particularly difficult to beat at home, having lost only two test series since 1986–87. Conversely, India had never managed to win a test series in Australia until 2018-19 series, which has recently concluded in Australia. It is a rare first Down Under for India since Lala Amarnath’s side visited the country just after independence to face Sir Donald Bradman’s team. The Australian batting was definitely weak due to the absence of their best batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner, but this not take the credit away from the Indian team led by Virat Kohli, which…

King gives up his throne

Malaysia's king, Sultan Muhammad V, has unexpectedly abdicated in a historic first. No Malaysian monarch has stepped away from the throne since the country gained independence from the UK more than 60 years ago. The National Palace did not give a reason for his resignation but said it would take effect immediately. It comes amid intense speculation about Muhammad's private life following reports that he has married a Russian. He went on medical leave in November and, later that month, photographs emerged that appeared to show him marrying a former Miss Moscow in the Russian capital. Officials have not commented…

India’s Longest Rail-Road Bridge

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bogibeel bridge in Assam on 25 th December 2018 - the birth anniversary of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, also known as Good Governance Day. The prime minister crossed the bridge in his cavalcade to the north bank of Brahmaputra, where he will flag off the Tinsukia-Naharlagun Intercity Express. The train will run five days a week. The 4.9-km bridge will cut down the train-travel time between Tinsukia in Assam to Naharlagun town of Arunachal Pradesh by more than 10 hours. The bridge is seen as an attempt by India to shore up its defence…

Chinas Luna Mission

China’s burgeoning space program achieved a lunar milestone : landing a probe on the mysterious and misnamed “dark” side of the moon. Exploring the cosmos from that far side of the moon, which people can’t see from Earth, could eventually help scientists learn more about the early days of the solar system and maybe even the birth of the universe’s first stars. Three nations — the United States, the former Soviet Union and more recently China — all have sent spacecraft to the side of the moon that faces Earth, but this landing is the first on the far side.…
