World This Week

The world this week is an attempt to provide worldly news to kids once a week. The idea behind this is to make them get started on reading world news but it’s written in a child friendly manner and explains some concepts too

United States Federal Shutdown

In United States politics, a government shutdown occurs when Congress fails to pass sufficient appropriation bills or continuing resolutions to fund federal government operations and agencies, or when the President refuses to sign such bills or resolutions into law. In such cases, the current interpretation of the Antideficiency Act requires that the federal government begin a "shutdown" of the affected activities involving the temporary leave of non-essential personnel and reduction of agency activities and services. Essential employees are still required to work without pay until the government reopens, when they may then receive back pay. These employees may include medical professionals in the Veterans Hospitals and TSA agents. Currently, the federal government has been on a shutdown since 22nd December…

The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are a set of 24 awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry, given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy's voting membership. Celebrating Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King 90th birthday just went on January 15. Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. Born in Atlanta, King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, tactics his Christian beliefs. He was greatly inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and its civil disobedience movement in India. Super Blood Moon

Super Blood Moon, a phenomenon wherein the Moon appears red or reddish brown, will take place on January 20 and 21 this year. Stargazers will be able to view a trifecta of events which includes a total lunar eclipse, super blood moon and a “Wolf Moon” or Super Blood Wolf Moon.
