Rishi Sunak: A quick guide to the new British Prime Minister 

The prime minister of the United Kingdom is the head of government of the United Kingdom. In 2019, the office of Minister for the Union was established; Boris Johnson became the first prime minister to hold this title. Rishi Sunak is the incumbent Prime Minister, succeeding Liz Truss on 25 October 2022. Here’s what you need to know about him. 

  • Mr. Sunak was born in Southampton, England, to parents of Indian origin who had emigrated from East Africa. He went to the boarding school Winchester College, then studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford, and business at Stanford in America. 
  • He was first elected as an MP in 2015, for Richmond in north Yorkshire and rose quickly to chancellor in February 2020 under Boris Johnson. 
  • As Mr. Johnson chancellor, he was behind the financial aid during lockdowns. 
  • Mr. Sunak is married to the Indian tech heiress Akshata Murthy, the daughter of Indian billionaire Narayana Murthy. The couple have two daughters.   
  • The 42-year-old has campaigned for Brexit and deregulation for “free ports” being as his long-time favorite ideas. 
  • He competed against Liz Truss to lead Britain’s Conservative Party and became the country’s third leader in less than two months, following the resignations of Truss and Johnson. 
  • He once told a group of school children that he originally wanted to be a Jedi Knight when he grew up. His favorite Star Wars film is The Empire Strikes Back.
