Mary Kom, is an Indian Olympic boxer hailing from Manipur. She is a five-time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships. She also became the first Indian Woman Boxer to win Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

She has just been to Poland for a boxing championship. She was going to compete in the 48 kg category, but when she landed in Poland at around 3.30 am on the day of the event, she was two kilograms higher. The general weight check was at around 7.30 am and if she was higher than 48 kgs she would have been disqualified for being over weight.

Despite being jet lagged due to travelling in a different time zone, Mary skipped rope for an hour continuously to shed the extra weight. This is called dedication to the sport.

She was the only senior gold-winner for India at the tournament, this being her third gold medal this year. This has been possible because of her focus solely on her sport, despite being a mother of three kids. She has enormous support, of course, from her husband Onler.

She is never satisfied with the way she performs and always strives to do better. On 26 April 2016, Kom was nominated by the President of India as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. She has rightfully been nicknamed ‘Magnificent Mary’.
