World This Week

The world this week is an attempt to provide worldly news to kids once a week. The idea behind this is to make them get started on reading world news but it’s written in a child friendly manner and explains some concepts too

French Protests

Emmanuel Macron was elected President of France on 7 May 2017, a series of protests have been conducted by trade union and left-wing activists in opposition to what protesters consider to be neoliberal policies. The yellow vests movement (French: Mouvement des gilets jaunes) is a political movement that started online in May 2018 and led to demonstrations that began in France on 17 November 2018. The protests are against rising fuel prices, the high cost of living, burden on the working and middle class. Protesters have called for reductions in fuel taxes, the reintroduction of the solidarity tax on wealth, the raising of the minimum wage, and the resignation of Emmanuel Macron as President of France. Srilankan Prime Minister resigns

Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned as Sri Lankas prime minister, seven weeks after he was appointed by the President Maithripala Sirisena in a move that sparked a political crisis. Former PM Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to return to office on 16 th December. The resignation could end a nearly two-month-long power struggle that has dented global confidence in Sri Lankas stability. The country and its economy had suffered huge damage since the crisis began 50 days ago in October. Author Amitav Ghosh Honoured With 54th Jnanpith Award

Amitav Ghosh is an Indian writer and the winner of 54th Jnanpith award, best known for his work in English fiction. In a first recognition for an English writer, Amitav Ghosh has been announced as 2018's Jnanpith Award winner for "outstanding contribution towards literature". The 1956, Kolkata-born author was described as a "path-breaking novelist" by Bharatiya Jnanpith. The awarding body said that Ghosh, in his novels, treads through historical settings to the modern era and weaves a space where the past connects with the present in relevant ways. George W Bush – An obituary

George W Bush , ex president and father of president George Bush died on November 30, 2018. He served as the 41st President of the United States from 1989 to 1993; he earlier served as the 43rd Vice President of the United States from 1981 to 1989. He had also been a congressman, ambassador, and Director of Central Intelligence. The ex president got a state funeral in Washington that was attended by the country's five living presidents and foreign dignitaries, Bush's flag-draped casket was flown to Texas for a final farewell.
